District and School Leaders, AI is NOT a Technology Decision.
Too often, we see AI strategy decisions land squarely on the desk of the Technology Department, as if it’s just another platform to vet, secure, and deploy. Three weeks ago, I had yet another conversation with a District Tech Committee Chair where, after several AI planning meetings, the Committee determined that their "BIG" AI strategy would be a) buy MagicSchool, or b) buy SchoolAI. Really? As a Google district, I advised that they should first review the new benefits and features of Gemini, then bring in the Curriculum Director and some master teachers into the decision-making process. Today, they advised me that they are rethinking their entire strategy and investing in themselves, while recovering thousands in unnecessary app purchases.
AI is not just another tool. It’s a transformational capability that can reimagine how we design curriculum, deliver instruction, and personalize learning for every student. It's an opportunity where investing in your teachers' capabilities to leverage GenAI will reap incremental benefits.
When AI is siloed in IT, we miss the real opportunity:
- To redesign learning pathways.
- To empower educators with intelligent planning and feedback tools.
- To close equity gaps with responsive, differentiated support.
- To give back TIME to teachers, counselors, and administrators.
- To create district-wide operational efficiencies that insulate against funding challenges and budget-busting policies out of our control
This is not about buying new software. It’s about rethinking how your entire system works. If AI decisions are only made through a tech lens, you're not just underutilizing its potential—you’re likely implementing it in ways that miss the mark and will cost years to recover.
The right place for AI conversations?
✓ In the curriculum office
✓ In the instructional leadership team
✓ In cabinet-level strategy sessions
AI belongs in your vision for teaching and learning, not just your tech stack. So the next time someone says, “We’re exploring AI,” ask:
“Is this about tools, or is this about transformation and rethinking learning?”
